Thin mints are popular cookies that are loved across the country. When a Girl Scout comes knocking, selling cookies, they are one of the first cookies many of us ask for. But are they vegan? It can be hard to find this out, especially if the girl selling you the cookies isn’t sure.

Well, no more! Today, we are here with the answers you need. Keep reading to find out if thin mints are vegan or not. We have plenty of information about them and guidance so you can see what Girl Scout cookies you can buy!

What Are Thin Mints?

Before we dive in, let’s have a quick recap for those that need it! Thin mints are cookies that are sold by the Girl Scouts. The cookie features a soft, mint-flavored center and is covered in dark chocolate.

Sold by the box, these cookies are made with natural peppermint oil and are a perfect mid-afternoon or after-dinner snack. They are the top-selling Girl Scout cookies and are produced by two different suppliers. You will find thin mints made by both ABC Bakers and Little Brownie Bakers.

Most of the US gets thin mints from Little Brownie Bakers, while major cities are supplied by ABC Bakers. There is a little taste difference between the two suppliers too.

Thin mints from ABC Bakers tend to be crunchier with a stronger mint flavor. Often, it can seem like the mint overpowers the chocolate.

Cookies from Little Brownie Bakers tend to have a smoother center and the chocolate seems to be thicker on them too. You can check with your local Girl Scouts to see who the supplier of thin mints is in your area.

Are Thin Mints Vegan?

So are thin mints vegan? Yes, they are! Regardless of the supplier, thin mints are always vegan! This is wonderful news for anyone following a vegan diet or looking to reduce their dairy content.

Are Thin Mints Vegan?

A few years ago, all thin mints went vegan and are even listed as vegan-friendly cookies! You don’t need to worry about accidentally ingesting any dairy with these cookies. They are made with the following ingredients:

  • Cocoa processed with alkali
  • Peppermint oil
  • Soy lecithin
  • Enriched flour
  • Cocoa
  • Caramel color
  • Sugar
  • Leavening agent
  • Cornstarch
  • Natural and artificial flavors

The only allergies listed on the packaging are soy and wheat, so you are safe to enjoy these! It is worth noting that the cookies are made in a facility that also handles milk, egg, tree nuts, and peanuts.

There could be a small risk of cross-contamination, despite the cookies being made with vegan ingredients. However, the risk is small, and many vegans consider them safe to eat!

What Other Girl Scout Cookies Are Vegan?

You have four other vegan options to choose from with Girl Scout cookies. However, the options you have do depend on the supplier. Let’s take a look at both suppliers now so you can see what your options are!

ABC Bakers

ABC Bakers offers four vegan cookie options! You can choose from the following:

  • Thin mints
  • Lemonades
  • Peanut butter patties
  • Toast-yay

All of these cookies are vegan and safe for you to enjoy. Take care with peanut butter patties, though. They are also manufactured by Little Brownie Bakers, who add milk to their peanut butter cookies. Make sure you check the supplier before ordering your box so you don’t accidentally eat dairy!

Little Brownie Bakers

Unfortunately, Little Brownie Bakers only offer one vegan cookie option, thin mints. The rest of their cookies contain milk or other dairy byproducts that make them unsuitable for a vegan diet.

And there you have it! Thin mints are vegan, regardless of the supplier! You can enjoy a chocolate and minty cookie without needing to worry about dairy or other animal products getting in the way! And depending on your supplier, you can also enjoy other Girl Scout cookies.
