How To Make Vegan Butter

Using just 4 basic ingredients, you will be whipping up a tasty vegan alternative dish in no time, whether that is using the butter to fry or bake or spread on some bread. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s get to it!

How To Make Simple Vegan Butter

What you will need to create delicious vegan butter:

  • ½ cup Sunflower or vegetable oil
  • 1 cup (Coconut oil (but it must be refined)
  • ¼ cup non-dairy milk (any will do)
  • Salt (just a pinch)
  • A mixing bowl
  • A wooden spoon
  • A spatula
  • A container to keep the vegan butter in
  • A hand mixer or stand mixer

Looking to add flavor?

You can add the likes of onion or garlic powder, oils with flavor, smoked paprika or other spices, and herbs such as thyme or rosemary. 

Looking to add color?

If you want the butter to have a yellow color to look more like regular butter, then adding a pinch of turmeric will do the job.

Step 1: Melt The Coconut Oil

Before you can use the refined version of coconut oil, you will want to make sure it has been softened first.

Whizzing it for a few seconds in the microwave should do the job, just do not overdo it. 

Step 2: Add All The Ingredients Together

Now that the above step is complete, you will want to add it to a bowl. Start with the coconut oil, and then follow with the chosen oil, the milk, and then a pinch of salt.

If you want to add some flavor, do so at this step. 

Step 3: Mix The Ingredients

Mix all of the ingredients together until you have a cream-like consistency that looks pale in color. Once you get to this part, stop mixing as you do not want to overdo it. 

Step 4: Let The Mixture Cool

Put the mixture into the refrigerator for around ten to fifteen minutes to chill and become slightly firmer. 

Make sure not to leave it too long as you want to avoid it going too firm. 

Step 5: Whip The Mixture

Once the time has passed, remove it from the refrigerator and either use a hand mixer which has the doubler beaters attached, or a stand mixer which has the attachment used for whisking.

Whip up the butter for around two minutes. This will create a wonderfully fluffy texture. 

Step 6: Transfer The Mixture

Once the above step has been completed, transfer the vegan butter into the container you wish to house it in. Smooth the top of the butter, and then put it back into the refrigerator.

Let it set for at least eight hours. Any sooner and it may be too soft.

Step 7: Now The Butter Is Ready To Use

Once the time has passed, you can begin using the vegan butter just like you would with any other butter. Enjoy!

Why Do These Ingredients Work For Vegan Butter?

Let’s take a look at why the above ingredients work so well for vegan butter:

Sunflower Or Vegetable Oil

The oil makes the butter really soft. This helps when you keep the butter in the fridge, as often when ingredients are left in a cooler environment, they become too firm to use. 

You can experiment with the ratios of both the chosen oil and the coconut oil to change the texture of the butter to your liking. For example, if you have a higher content of coconut oil present compared to vegetable oil, the butter will be harder and firmer. 

Coconut Oil

Speaking of coconut oil, the reason this is present in vegan butter is to help firm up the mixture. It even keeps the butter solid when left at room temperature, so it is a key ingredient if you want to make a butter alternative.

Using a refined form of coconut oil helps to take away that coconut aftertaste that you might experience when using coconut oil. However, if you would like a hint of coconut running through the butter, choose cold-pressed or extra virgin. 

Non-Dairy Milk

Adding in milk helps the vegan butter to be creamy. The reason we often use butter is that it is much creamier than margarine. The milk also just helps to bind everything together too. 

Some kinds of milk will have a stronger flavor than others, so it will be worth experimenting with what works best for you. 


A pinch of salt helps the vegan butter act as a preservative without the need for anything else. It also improves on the already delicious flavor. 


Turmeric is a great way to add a bit of color without altering the taste. Just a tiny amount will do. Also, adding spices, herbs, and powders is a great way to naturally flavor the butter if you would like to go a little more fancy for a dinner party or get together with friends.

How Long Will Homemade Vegan Butter Last?

Once you have made the vegan butter, you will then want to keep it in the fridge. It should last for around two whole weeks, but always check to see if something seems off close to the two-week mark and after it.

If you want it to last longer because you have perhaps made too much, freezing it will allow the butter to last for 3 months.

We do not recommend leaving any butter out at room temperature. It likely will not last more than a few days at best.
